Dietary Tips to Avoid Recurring Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are very painful, and they can cause kidney damage in the long run. There are different factors that cause them, and the influence of diet is very crucial. Through dietary changes you will be able to get your risk of kidney stones significantly reduced.

1. Stay Hydrated:

     Drink plenty of water: This is the most important factor in stone kidney prevention. The recommended intake is about 6-8 glasses of water every day, however, if the weather is hot or you exercise vigorously consider increasing this amount.

     Reduce Sugar: Consumption of sugary drinks increases the chance of getting kidney stones since these beverages do not hydrate the body. Instead of sodas, adolescents should opt for water, unsweetened tea, or diluted fruit juices to ensure that they do not get dehydrated.

2. Reduce Sodium In Diet:

     Reduce salt consumption: High sodium intake is also a cause of high urine concentration which is in most cases the root cause of kidney stones formation. Try and reduce your intake of salty foods, products in cans, and fast foods which are rich in sodium.

     Fresh Vegetables: Go for fresh fruits and vegetables, which are naturally low in sodium and can help you meet your hydration needs.

3. Moderate Amount of Protein:

     Protein : Though protein plays an important role in the body, an excess of protein might elevate the chances of kidney stone formation in certain individuals. Prefer a balanced protein intake by selecting low-fat sources such as chicken, fish, and beans.

     Limit animal protein: Regular intake of animal protein may promote the production of uric acid, a substance that may lead to the formation of stones.

4. Reduce Oxalate Intake:

     Limit oxalate-rich foods: Oxalate is a naturally occurring substance found in many foods. High oxalate intake can increase your risk of kidney stones. Foods to limit include spinach, rhubarb, nuts, and chocolate.

     Consider oxalate binders: If you have a history of kidney stones, your doctor may recommend taking oxalate binders, which can help reduce the absorption of oxalate from your digestive tract.

5. Monitor Calcium Intake:

     Calcium intake: Avoid unnecessary calcium supplements without  a doctor’s advise

     Choose the right calcium sources: Opt for calcium-rich foods like dairy products, fortified cereals, and leafy greens.

 6. Avoid Excessive Vitamin C:

     Vitamin C intake:  Vitamin C Supplements should be avoided without medical advise. Excessive Vitamin C supplementation can cause oxalate stones.
