Who Needs Dialysis?

Dialysis is a procedure when the kidneys are not able to filter waste and extra fluids out of the blood properly. For individuals with illnesses such as End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD): The primary failure point is when the kidneys stop functioning:

  • End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD): The main point of failure occurs when the kidneys cease to function. This causes a gradual accumulation of toxic substances in the body. End-stage renal disease (ESRD) can be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure, or chronic infections.
  • Acute Kidney Failure: Acute kidney failure that requires urgent treatment, can become life-threatening otherwise. This can be a reversible type of kidney disease and may require hemodialysis on a temporary basis.
  • Kidney Transplant Candidates: Patients with an end-stage kidney disease waiting for a kidney transplant need to continue with hemodialysis until a proper organ is available Symptoms such as swelling, breeathlessness, fatigue, nausea, and confusion may be a signal for kidney failure. Dialysis is a form of supportive care for the patients whose kidneys are non functional and therefore dialysis requirement is usually thrice per week and to be continued on regular basis. Dialysis helps in improving the quality of life, decreasing symptoms and help people with kidney disease to go about their routine activities and to pursue their careers.

Types of Dialysis Offered at NU Hospitals

There are two major types of dialysis we offer at NU Hospitals.:

1. Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis is a procedure to filter waste and water from blood, as your kidneys did when they were healthy. Hemodialysis helps in maintaining blood pressure and balancing important minerals such as potassium, sodium, and calcium, in your blood. Hemodialysis is usually performed thrice a week.

  • Arteriovenous (AV) Fistula: An AV fistula is a surgically created connection between an artery and a vein, usually in the upper arm, to provide easy access for long-term dialysis. It is often planned before starting hemodialysis to ensure access when needed.

    Since the fistula takes time to mature, this early planning allows it to be ready for future dialysis treatments.

  • Arteriovenous Graft (AV Graft):

    An AV graft involves placing a synthetic tube between an artery and a vein to serve as a permanent access point for dialysis.

    It is typically used when a patient’s blood vessels are not suitable for creating a fistula.

  • Catheters: Temporary tubes placed in veins located in the neck, chest, or thigh veins to provide immediate access for patients who need urgent dialysis.

2. Peritoneal Dialysis (PD)

Peritoneal dialysis is a procedure for kidney failure that uses the lining of your abdomen, to filter your blood inside the body. This lining in our abdomen is called the peritoneum. Before starting peritoneal dialysis, a surgeon places a soft tube, called a catheter, in your abdomen. Unlike hemodialysis which is usually performed thrice a week – peritoneal dialysis has to be performed on daily basis. PD options include:

  • Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD): A machine-assisted method typically done overnight.
  • Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD): A manual process performed multiple times a day
